Description and goals

Due to its geographical location and meteorological conditions, the African country of Cameroon is regularly exposed to flooding.

In the "INTEWAR" research project, an interdisciplinary consortium coordinated by the Research Institute for Water and Waste Management at the RWTH Aachen University (FiW) e. V. focuses on the topic of civil security in Cameroon for flood and drought scenarios. During the three-year project, monitoring and supply concepts as well as alarm and emergency plans for the protection of the population and infrastructure will be developed and training measures for the responsible actors will be carried out.

The joint project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the framework of the funding measure "IKARIM - International Disaster and Risk Management".

Within the joint project, the IWW is responsible for the preparation of flood hazard and risk maps for three project areas in Cameroon. For this purpose, high-resolution digital terrain models of the study areas will be generated by photogrammetry of drone images in combination with satellite remote sensing data. A numerical surface runoff model for heavy rainfall events will be build and serve as the basis for the flood maps, which will identify suitable locations for the PAULA water treatment plants and form the basis for emergency planning.
