EcoHydroOP - Ecological and economic optimization of hydro power plant operation.

In this project, a dynamic optimization process is studied that takes hydro power plant operation points, turbine flow, water levels, turbine efficiency, fish damage, energy prices as well as operational restraints into account. The goal of the research is to design a management decision tool that enables operators to decide which mode of turbine operation is optimal under which circumstances. This allows operators to make educated decisions and find resource-efficient ways to reach fish protection goals.

Within this collaborative project the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management is responsible for data collection and data provision for the optimization tool. Therefore, an extensive literature research regarding mortality and injury rates of different fishes at different turbine types and different operational points has to be done. Furthermore, a suitable fish mortality model has to be selected.
