Challenges and objectives
Nowadays our river catchment areas show a strong anthropogenic character. It is challenging to identify natural morphodynamic processes and describe their impact in the system. While keeping up a high flood protection also ecological and infrastructural needs have to be considered when working on a holistic approach to characterize and develop our river systems. Answers can be found in using interdisciplinary methods. Besides classical approaches are used and modified in order to characterize and describe particle transport - natural sediments as well as for micro plastic. Hereby it is import to conduct life cycle analysis to follow the particles on the entire pathway through out the river system. Besides the quantification of transport rates and ways it is necessary to determine whether the interested particle may have an (eco-)toxic impact when contaminated with pollutants.
The research group aims to understand the fundamental transport behavior and ways of particles in our river systems from spring to sea. Hereby spatial and temporal scales need to be considered.
Research methods
The work of the research group morphodynamic and sediments focuses on fundamental questions concerning particle transport and resulting impacts for the river system.
Here it is important to describe detailed the physical processes as well as the chemical and biological impacts in an interdisciplinary team of researchers. Impact can be described for individual species as well as for the entire catchment area.
Answering the research questions field measurements, laboratory studies, numerical models and theoretical approaches are used.
