Description of the course
The everyday work in the field of hydraulic engineering and water management often includes practical work in the form of field investigations and numerical or physical modelling in addition to recurring standard tasks. In the institute internship phase, students gain an insight into independent scientific work and research-oriented working methods. The students deepen their understanding of hydromechanical processes through visualisation and their own practical experience. By handling measurement technology during the field test, the students develop the ability to independently carry out hydraulic engineering investigations and natural measurements. Furthermore, the students will gain experience in analysing data with the tools of geoinformation systems and performing the first hydrological calculations in QGIS. The students will gain the ability to work together on an application-related topic and to document their work in a joint report. This is intended to create competences and tools for the time-effective and high-quality processing of scientific investigations (e.g. bachelor theses).
Learning objectives
Learning objectives
The students learn the basic principles of practical and scientific work. In addition to the methodological tools, the students gain a deeper understanding of hydromechanical processes through illustrative examples and the intensive examination of a practical task. Furthermore, first experiences with the application of geoinformation system tools (QGIS) are made possible.
The course can serve as preparation for the bachelor thesis by imparting competences and tools for time-effective and high-quality processing of scientific investigations.
Content
- LE 1 - Organisational aspects of the course and introduction to hydraulic engineering work
- LE 2 - Basis of geoinformation systems
- LE 3 - GIS exercise
